One neighbor at a time

Lo que no mata, engorda ...
i just saw this button that said "BlogThis!" and i clicked it and now i will see how it works.

Today I took my neighbor Jeff to the store. I don't really know Jeff all that well but I'm enjoying meeting all my neighbors. They are very interesting.

To the right live Mya and Oksana. Mya is an exchange student from Russia and I think she's only here for the semester and she saw a possom in the back alley and thought it was a rat. She took Tracy-with-the-red-SUV's place when she moved out. Oksana is also from Russia. She went to my high school and graduated with my younger brother and dated his friend Joe. She also gave us some cupcakes on a plate with sunflowers on it and I need to return that plate.

Above Mya and Oksana live Karen and her roommate. Karen is a senior and she uses our trash can sometimes out back. She works somewhere that she has to wear black pants and white button up ... probably a restaurant. I don't know her roommate's name but once I helped her back her car out.

Above me and next to Karen and back-out girl live my most favorite neighbor so far Orlando and his roommate Sasha. Sasha is a boy and he is from Russia too. He likes to play his music very loud and sits on the porch to smoke and play guitar. He's not around very much and once when the ceiling was leaking he thought rats had peed in their cabinets. He drives an old white toyota. Orlando is from Peru. I think thats why I like him so much plus he's really nice. Orlando has a wife and an 18 month old son named Gabriel ... they are moving here on Dec. 20!! He is an international business grad student and he drives a Subaru station wagon but it has a flat tire right now that can't be patched and he can't afford a new tire right now. He likes to eat chocolate pudding and is the first of my neighbors that I met (other than oksana but that doesnt count bc i knew her before).

To my left live Roger and his roommate, whose name I don't know. Roger is from Taiwan and he came here for to get his doctorate in Political Science. He has never been to Charleston buts wants to visit and is trying to decide would it be better to stay in a hotel downtown and not worry about driving and parking or stay outside of downtown for cheaper but have to deal with car issues. I have never officially met Roger's roommate but I think he might be from Taiwan too. He waves at me every time I see him and when I first move in I saw him watching me paint my bed and desk.

Above Roger and his roommate live Jeff and Paco. Jeff is from Macon, GA but he doesn't have a Southern accent. He has tried to lose it so as to ditch the stereotype. He is 27 and is in graduate school for international business and prefers small business. He traveled for 5 years after he graduated from college to lots of place in Europe and Asia ... he was in the Peace Corps for 2 of those years in Kazakistan (?? ... some country that ends in stan). He came back once to sell his car for more money. He still doesn't have a car and is a tea connoisseur and also makes his own beer. He buys chicken in bulk when it is on sale. Paco is from Guadelajara, Mexico and is also in international business. He is going to New York for fall break. I want to know more about Paco.

I don't know the people who live in the 2 apartments by Roger, Paco and Jeff. Some of them have lots of halloween decoration outside their apartment.

I have liked getting to know my neighbors. They are really interesting and watching them and talking to them makes my life interesting. I highly encourage getting to know your neighbors. I only knew Oksana, Karen and Orlando until Orlando said, "you should know your neighbors. people here do they think it's weird when i knock on their door and say hello i'm your neighbor because people look at me strange. just take it one neighbor at a time."

isn't engorda really more like "fatter"... not stronger... as in, what doesn't kill you, fattens??? i'm just thinking of the gortita at taco bell right now... and... oh man. (*sound of jimmy running for the border).

you are correct jimmy it does means fattens ... but in spanish thats how the saying goes. I guess they value a good fat person ... i guess it just means they've made it through a lot .. who knows. (i secretly kind of like it better ... [me in the future] "yeah i'm not really fat its just that i've dealt with so many hard things and survived that ... well, they fattened me up...")
