In honor of those of us who are celebrating Singles Awareness Day on this fine day, the 14th of February, 2007 I would like to share with you why the acronym for this alternative holiday should not be SAD which is misprepresentative of the emotions singles feel on a regular basis.
Top However Many Advantages to Singledom:
1. I don't have to have an obligatory phone conversation with anyone, any night of the week. I talk on the phone as I please ... which is usually never.
2. When I get home from school/work/practicum I can spend countless hours having "personal time" if I so desire.
3. I can move pretty much to any place in the whole wide world that I want without having to be concerned about what someone else wants (a personal favorite perk!)
4. I can flirt shamelessly with countless Hispanic people - construction workers, exchange students, etc. (another personal favorite) haha
5. I don't expect anything so I don't get let down on holidays ... for example, on this holiday I heard of once ... I think it is centered around love ... oh maybe it's called Valentine's Day.
6. I don't have to remember random dates (anniversaries, birthdays) or spend money on presents for them.
7. I can choose a date that is appropriate to whichever event I need a date for. Example: if I'm going to an event with dancing, invite someone who likes to dance ... if I'm going to an event with guinea pigs, invite someone who likes small pet rodents ... you get the picture
8. I can still celebrate that other holiday, Valentine's Day AND S.A.D., because you see Valentine's Day is about love NOT people in relationships and my mom and dad and probably other people love me and I love them.
9. No one is trying to get a peek at my feet. Ok I lied some people still try to do this to annoy me, BUT I feel like a significant other would be particulary pushy about me sharing my feet ... and I'm just not ok with that.
There are more reasons but I'm tired and since I'm single I can pretty much go to bed whenever I want ... aaaaaaaahhhh. My point is: all single people aren't sad. So on this S.A.D. be aware of the very fun-loving and life-enjoying single near you ... and stop trying to feel sorry for them, fix them up with random people, convince them that not-single life is better. It's only better for someone who wants it, when they want it.
Happy Valentine's/Singles Awareness Day ... whichever you are celebrating!
