I am in Salisbury, NC now. I would tell you more about it but it's only my 3rd day here, so I'll just wait on that one. But I was home for a week after the CofC graduation (congrats to all you finished-with-college kids: nick, adam, ashley, jamie, angela, unpresent erin, kellie, ashleyw, bo, uhhhh i can't remember you all right now... sorry crap i'm gonna offend someone) and so while I was home I got a fresh reminder of how it is in my hometown. My hometown is the kind of place where you hear women calling each other and saying, "Peggy, just come by when you get the chance and I'll just leave the cake out on the porch for you." My hometown is the kind of place where you drive 2 miles to your grandparents house, cross the street to you visit your great uncle and go just .5 miles to visit your cousins. My hometown is the kind of place where the phrase "Does a cat have a climbin' gear?" means the same thing as "yes" but "yes" certainly does not mean the same thing as "yes sir." My hometown is a place where you can't break the speed limit because you know everyone you pass and they'll all go straight home and call your dad. Where I'm from, when you forget to turn the oven off, its no problem to call your neighbor and say, "Sandra, I left the roast cooking in the oven. Would you mind going over and taking it out for me?" The answer is always yes. My hometown is the kind of place where you leave someones house and have them call 2 minutes later and say, "David, watcha doin?" even though of course the answer will be "Drivin home, deddy." because you just left them. My hometown is definitely the kind of place where you say "Deddy." My hometown is the kind of place where you will get talked about behind your back like crazy, but you still know people love you. My hometown is a place that always smells like honeysuckles and turkey barns, sweet and sour. My hometown is the kind of place where its ok to have as many desserts to choose from as there are main dishes. My hometown is Rich Hill, it's in Heath Springs which is in Lancaster which is in South Carolina. My hometown is pretty messed up sometimes but its where I will always feel comfortable, where I will always know the secrets just as well as I know the shortcuts and where I will always go back to. My hometown is where I will always call home because its what raised me and like that country song says that the old men in my town listen to, "don't get above your raising."
I don't really know what Salisbury is like yet. Haven't been here long enough to figure it out. Some of it is like home, the people. But it still isn't close enough that I have slept a whole night through yet.
