Costa Rican Moon
I'm sitting in a green chair waiting for the next group of kids to arrive. Ariel comes wandering in, hands all over the place, eyes wandering, making little fart noises with his mouth.
"Hola Ariel, cómo estás?"
He doesn't respond, even though I know he heard me. He has Asperger's so social interactions aren't his high point, but he's working on it. We makes a wiggly path to his seat, still ignoring me, eyes everywhere but in my direction.
"Ariel, how are you today? Did you go to school today?"
He smiles to himself and keeps fidgeting his hands and swinging his feet. They barely touch the floor from his red plastic chair. Slowly he turns his head and slides his eyes over to me. I take the opportunity to stick out my tongue and cross my eyes. He whips his head back, puts 2 fists to his mouth and giggles. Then he turns and makes a face back.
"Ewww que feo! That was ugly." I wrinkle my nose in mock disgust.
He giggles again, never looking directly at me. Suddenly he hops out of his red chair.
"Ariel, sit down, Teacher Carla is coming and she told you to sit down." Ariel is known for wandering off and not listening. True to character, he doesn't sit back down but turns his back to me.
I'm about to get up and physically put him back in the chair, when I look up and see the tiniest little tan behind flash in front of me. Laughter rips through the room as Ariel plants himself back in his seat and doubles over with his mouth covered.
Oh my God, I just got mooned by a 6 year old Costa Rican kid with Asperger's.
And that's all I could think. No scolding. No laughing. Just my mouth hanging open as 2 more kids marched in to start therapy.
